Today is  5th September. This day is special because ,on this day, a great scholar and former president of India was born. His  name was Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was a teacher par excellence. Let’s pay tribute to this illustrious person by throwing some light on his life.

 

Dr Radhakrishnan belonged to a poor family. His father wanted him to become priest. He however wanted to study and joined a school against the wishes of his father. He graduated from Madras Christian College. At the age of 21, he was appointed as assistant lecturer in Madras Presidency College. He proved to be a wonderful teacher and was the favourite of students. At the age of 40 ,he was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Andhra University and later became the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University.

 

   After India attained Independence , Dr Radhakrishnan was appointed as the Vice President of India in 1952. He continued to hold this position till 1962 and subsequently became the President of India. He devoted his life for acquiring and spreading knowledge. India celebrates 5th September as Teacher’s Day where students across the country participate in certain programs prepared exclusively for their teachers. Students make their teachers feel special in the form of flowers and hand  made cards too.
